“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33 New International Version
This was a fitting and calming verse to come across in my daily reading. When I sat down to read John 16, the current atmosphere of panic and unrest was on my heart and mind. As I caught sight of news articles and flashed over social media postings, the emotions seemed to be welling up inside. I thought about this sense of fear spreading rapidly and to escalating heights.
Fear seems to be the most contagious of all epidemics.
Leading up to this verse, Jesus is obscurely telling his disciples about his impending death. He warns them that they will be scattered and isolated. But He finishes His proclamations with words of hope. He tells them they will not be alone. Despite being separated from their fellow believers or scattered beyond their homes, God promises to never leave them. They will never be alone.
Our current situation gives great cause and reason for isolation. Something the Devil uses as a foothold: fear and isolation. People are stocking up and preparing to be closed off and isolated inside their homes. Our communities, including our Christian communities, are retreating into isolation.
This verse is an important reminder that we are not alone. Even in times of physical isolation, in times of fear, in times of uncertainty, God is walking the road with us. He has given us His peace, not a worldly peace based on circumstances, but a peace from the Holy Spirit. A peace that comforts us and reminds us that no matter what we face today, no matter what surfaces tomorrow, God is our loving Father and Savior.
God has overcome the world.
There WILL be trouble, we WILL face trials. But God has defeated the prince of this world. Death, disease, fear, and isolation are all in our Sovereign Lord’s control.
Take heart! God, our King, reigns victorious.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
