How Do We?

To React or Let it Go

When experiencing conflict, there are choices: to engage or not. If we engage, we can fight or remain peaceful. Not engaging can also look a few different ways such as forgiving so we can move on or holding a grudge. The conflict and how we handle the related emotions can be damaging or fruitful. How can conflict be good or bad?

Forgiveness is always a good idea.

“Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.” Matthew 18: 21-22 English Standard Version

Moving on from an incident and not becoming offended works when deciding how to respond.

“Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.” Proverbs 19:11 English Standard Version

Clear up any issues you have with someone every day before you publicly declare you are a Christian.

“So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and goFirst be reconciled to your brotherand then come and offer your gift.” Matthew 5:23-24 English Standard Version

One of the big reasons we forgive others is to prevent any hard feelings or offense we hold in our heart. If we choose not to forgive, the result is distance from God. He wants us to forgive everyone as He forgives us.

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32 English Standard Version

Being kind, tenderhearted and in a state of constant forgiveness is critical when deciding to respond or not. Praying before speaking is important also.

An example of responding is when Bill Johnson, a pastor in California, experiences frustration or exasperation for a person, he will focus on that person until he feels God’s pleasure for them. I use that technique often and it is amazing how effective the love for someone will change the way we see and feel about them.

The most important aspect in all of this is not just self-awareness but also God-awareness and how we become more like Him.

Blessed Trash

by Desiree Bustamante

Nothing is wasted when God repurposes your trash.

You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking on this SoundCloud link.

“He lifted me out of the pit of despair,
out of the mud and the mire.
He set my feet on solid ground
and steadied me as I walked along.
He has given me a new song to sing,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see what he has done and be amazed.
They will put their trust in the Lord.”
Psalm 40:2-3 New Living Translation

People make a lot of trash. So much trash, in fact, that it is negatively impacting our environment. Some people are trying to alleviate the mountains of garbage produced each year by recycling anything possible to make new products out of old waste. Even recycling old coffee grounds can create a garden of healthy produce.

We are sinners and our lives are full of garbage. Even our righteous deeds are nothing but filthy rags to a holy, righteous God. But our loving God rescued us and our sinful life from the trash pile through the cleansing blood of His son Jesus Christ.

Just like our trash, we try to hide our sin from others and from God. But God asks us to step into His light with our trash exposed. Then He forgives us, creates a unique purpose for us and uses our past experiences, pain and redemption from sin as an example of His love and mercy. All so others might see our changed lives and turn to Him.

Nothing in your life is ever wasted! God has the power to heal, purify and change your heart and your life. So, the next time you take out your recycling, remember that God is making you into something new and asking you to share your story with those who do not yet know His love, forgiveness and grace. Your redeemed trash will be someone’s eternal blessing.

First Words

Advent is Here

You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking this Soundcloud link

In celebrating the first day of Advent I thought it would be interesting to hear Jesus’ first recorded words on Earth as a man. Check out these verses from the Gospels:

“Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Matthew 3:15

Jesus is responding to John about His baptism. What I love about this verse is that Jesus doesn’t say ‘me’ in the singular to fulfill all righteousness; he says ‘us.’ He hints that the fulfillment of what he came for will take more than just Him to complete. He knows this is a group effort, that He is inviting us on His mission.

“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” Mark 1:15

Some time later after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee and said these words. He was announcing who He was and why He was here and what He had come to complete. Namely, bringing the Kingdom of God to Earth.

“It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” Luke 4:4

This verse is Jesus’ rebuttal to the devil, and the first words we hear from Jesus in the book of Luke. Jesus is the bread of life, and He is very aware that food is good, but He is also giving His own life so that the world can eat from the bread of His body, which is even better.

Yet Jesus didn’t speak His own thoughts. He only spoke, acted, moved, and did what God the Father did.

“So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.” John 5:19

As we move deeper into Advent, I encourage us to imitate Jesus’ life on Earth. If we are to become more like Him we can study and read, but we also need to apply the words of Jesus to our own situation. Reach over and offer the bread of life to someone who is hurting, speak life to a neighbor, bring Peace into a chaotic situation.

We can all bring a piece of Jesus into the environment we’ve been blessed to be a part of. Our lives and how we treat others is the gospel in the flesh. As Francis of Assisi says, “Preach the Gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.”
