“And the angel answered her (Mary), “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy – the Son of God.””
Luke 1:35 English Standard Version
When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, a young unmarried woman in Nazareth of Galilee, he brought her incredible news; she was to give birth to the Son of God! This was the promised one, the Messiah who would save His people from their sins. He would be born in a most miraculous way, through a virgin birth.
And Mary, this common, ordinary young woman from a common ordinary town, would be the mother of the Son of God! For this was God’s plan, that through lowly and humble circumstances Immanuel, God With Us, would come. For He was destined to save the world, not through might or power, but through sacrifice and death on a cross. The Son of God would come into the world to atone for the sins of you and me. God loved us so much that His Son would become one of us and redeem us from our sins.
This was and is amazing news! That God would love us and choose us for salvation! Mary takes that news and responds with humbleness and acceptance and joy. Certainly she felt fear and trepidation, but she trust God’s promises given to her. She simply said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38)
So also may we humbly accept the Good News of the Savior born for us, God’s love poured out for us! Amen!
Ah, dearest Jesus, holy Child,
Prepare a bed, soft, undefiled.
A quiet chamber set apart
For You to dwell within my heart.
