The original Bents Fort played a significant role in the growth of the United States even though it influenced the border between Mexico and the U.S. for only sixteen years. The fort was a gathering place for many people. Both European and Native American cultures congregated here, often struggling to communicate with each other, yet sharing a common life that centered on trading commodities.

Bent’s Old Fort, La Junta, Colorado

Kansas City was the nearest fledgling community 600 miles to the east. Situated on the mountain route of the Santa Fe trail, the fort was the largest structure travelers met until they reached their destination.

The people who gathered at Bent’s Fort needed each other.

It’s obvious why Bent’s fort would draw people to this remote location, but why are people drawn to Christ? According to Jesus’ own words, his crucifixion is the reason people come to him. His power to draw people to himself transcends culture, national origins, and languages. All people come to Christ through his death and resurrection.

We are not excluded. All means all. His death is our death to sin. His life is our power to thrive in a sin-filled world.

His gift to us is the gift of community. God leads us into community as he draws all people to himself, and in this community he saves lives. The community at Bent’s Fort saved people’s lives. God continues to save lives through the community of his people.

Our gathering place is not a fort, but a cross.
