^{The comparison trap.}

I wonder if this guy ever feels inferior being a mule among horses. If I was him, I’m sure I would envy that palomino up on the hill shining golden in the afternoon sun. You see, I compulsively compare myself to others resulting in envy alternating with pride.

Actually, this guy seems pretty unaware of my projections. He just is. He’s likely content with how God made him thinking nothing of it because, well, he’s a mule and does not contemplate such things. Gosh, I envy that.

Do you ever feel less than others; less gifted, less beautiful, less (fill in the blank)? Or do you sometimes feel superior to people who seem less competent, less godly, less (fill in the blank)?

When we compare ourselves to others we are seeking a sense of self-satisfaction and worth in something other than who God created us to be, and the work He’s given us to do. We compulsively rank ourselves hoping to perch on a higher rung.

But the ground is level at the cross.

God grant us humility that we may experience freedom from the trap of comparisons. May we test our work only against Your unique call on us, and rest content knowing You will fulfill Your good purposes through us as we offer ourselves to You.
