A Pillar of Fire

“And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people.”
Exodus 13:21-22 English Standard Version
This image is the closest that I can conceive to having the presence of God be with me in a pillar of fire. I am sure it was much more daunting and intimidating, but in a similar way this takes my breath away. God promised to be with his people, even though it seemed like he was leading them to a dead end. Away from the Egyptians, a life of slavery, to the Red Sea, where they could not imagine a way to cross. God did the unimaginable, he led them with awe inspiring power to prove his provision and dedication to his people.
We might not see God’s presence in the same way the Israelites did, but we can still be overwhelmed by the goodness of God. Maybe you see this in the generosity of others, those who care for the poor and needy. Maybe you see this in your church community where they gather around someone who has gone through tragedy. Every time we partake in the Lord’s Supper, we behold Jesus Christ the Son of God given and shed for us. We are his people, and we will be cared for and provided for just as the Israelites were. We might think we are being led to a dead end, but we know that Christ will return in power and glory to wipe away our pain and tears. His return will be daunting, intimidating, and awe-inspiring.
