“I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you…”
Ephesians 1:16-18 English Standard Version (ESV)
Have you ever seen two or more cameras angled in such a way as to see a picture within a picture? This man and I enjoyed such a moment when our phones lined up to take the same picture, as the train meandered slowly through a canyon.
Upon a closer look, our cameras didn’t take the same picture. Each one was angled just a little differently, and his photo offers another perspective. My photo has the man’s hand in it. His photo captures the passengers in the seats beyond us.
Reading God’s Word can be like a picture within a picture, each with a slightly different perspective.
Recently I spoke with a friend who said he’d read the entire Bible once, and was familiar with its contents. However, reading the entirety of the Bible at one time, like a history book, offers one perspective at one reading.
One can spend a lifetime reading the Bible, and each time the Holy Spirit reveals different truths.
“Open my eyes, that I may behold
wondrous things out of your law.”
Psalm 119:18 English Standard Version (ESV)
God’s word is the key to a relationship with God. He is crazy about you, knows you by your name, and he wants to be part of your life every day. While nothing in this world is forever, God is forever, and he will never give up on you.
Spending time in the word, every day, deepens that relationship, and every time you read, you’ll gain a different perspective of his truth. The entirety of scripture points to Jesus and the promise of his salvation for you. May your time begin with the prayer, “Lord, open my eyes,” and be filled with joy.
