Seek What is Honorable.

 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

I always love visiting the United States Air Force Academy. The Cadet Chapel is one of the biggest tourist attractions on the complex. Its expressionist modern architectural design depicts fighter jets aiming toward the sky. A granite stairway leads to a landing with gold anodized aluminum doors. Arches on the inside of the chapel are adorned with mosaic stained glass.

Each time I see the structure, I marvel at its symbolism and intricate detail. The jet-like spires point toward the heavens in a display of honor and strength. The whole thing is very regal, and compliments the Air Force’s motto:  Aim High….Fly, Fight, Win.

I often wonder, do I aim high within my own life? What is it that I daily fixate upon? Where should my focus be? Often, I am bogged down by news, social media, hurtful gossip, failed relationships, and my own irrational fears.

In Paul’s letter to the Philippians, he urges Christ’s followers not to look at the ways of the world with its division, pride and corruption; but rather, to think about what is true, honorable, just, pure and lovely. He is not saying to be uninvolved or uninterested with matters of this life, but rather that our main focus should be on that which is positive, uplifting and in line with Christ’s example and teachings.

In today’s society, it is often hard to discern what is noble and good. We are daily bombarded with politics, intolerance, anger, violence, greed, war, slander, gossip and deception. If we are honest, all of these things also occur within our families and inside our own hearts.

As I reflect on my own sinful nature and Christ’s journey to the cross during this Lenten season, may I aim high and redirect my eyes and heart on what is right, just and true.
