“…you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 1:8b English Standard Version
Do you ever get the feeling that you’re being watched? As a mother, I know that I am always being watched. There are little eyes watching everything I do, how I react, and how I face the world. I sat and watched my two little boys watch the person painting our house, fulfilling his duty as a worker. These little eyes take in everything, but that is true of everyone.
As Christ ascended into heaven, he proclaimed that we, the baptized, are witness to the ends of the earth. All the eyes of the world are on us, what we do, how we react, and how we face the world. Are we called to live according to the ways of the world? Are we called to be different? Dietrich Bonhoeffer calls this calling of a Christian, “extraordinary,” not in the sense that it is remarkable, but that it is counter-cultural. We reflect Christ to the world, and that means we are to act differently, even a little odd. We are to turn away from sin and fix our eyes on the cross. We are to help point all the eyes of the world to the cross. In this way, God uses us as his means to the world. In our vocations, in our daily lives, we are extraordinary witnesses for Christ.
