Progressive Letting Go

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy.”
Psalm 16:11 English Standard Version
My father always said this to me growing up, but I never fully understood it until I had my own children, “Parenting is a progressive act of letting go.” This statement comes into full clarity with rambunctious toddlers who have strong personalities and like to find their own adventure. My young son likes to just run off and explore. The helicopter mom in me wants to make him hold my hand wherever we go and not let him out of my sight, but if I were always to do that he would never experience things on his own.
God can use me to teach my children about the wonderful story of Jesus, but God also wants to personally be with my son. Through his baptism, my son can have the full joy of God’s presence. This is an adventure in itself, learning about God and exploring the depths of his love. God has blessed me with the vocation of teaching him about the path of life in Christ, but I have to let go to see just what God is going to do with my children. Today, think about what you might be able to give into God’s hands and let go with your own, to see what adventure might be in store.
