There is a big difference between an empty plate and a clean plate. A clean plate is to say the plate was once dirty (or full) and that someone enjoyed the meal. An empty plate is to say there wasn’t food on it in the first place. During this season of Lent, many people fast or refrain from eating or drinking some of their favorites: desserts, soda, and the list goes on. The idea is that these small sacrifices point us to the greater sacrifice that Jesus makes for us in His great love. The harsh reality is that many people in this world do not have an empty plate due to religious practice, but because they simply lack the funds or access to food. That is why Christians support local food banks and seek to participate in mercy ministries. We read in Philippians 4:12-13, “I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me”. Regardless of our current circumstances, Christ strengthens us. May that be comfort for today!
