“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Jeremiah 29:11 New International Version

When I was growing up, we always took a fun family road trip in the middle of the summer. I was so eager to get that early morning wake-up whisper from Mom. Being a quality-time person, I loved being together in the car. But everyone has their threshold, right? So, naturally, my brother and I took turns rephrasing the question we’ve all asked at one point or another:

Are we there yet?

Our lives are very similar, aren’t they? Often we want to hurry up and get there. Most of the time, we miss out on the little things. We forget to take in our surroundings. Granted, that’s tough to do when all we want is to “arrive”…to have answers. I don’t know about you; but I find myself inundated with questions, followed by extreme impatience. When will I find peace? When will I have clarity? When will I be out of this storm? When will the next storm come? What we are really asking in all this is: when will I know my future?

And when we spiral into those moments of whens, what-if’s and why’s, it’s then that we need our all-important road map. Whether you use high-tech nav or the old-fashioned atlas, your go-to guide will only ever be the one who gave you life. God knows the route. He has the plans. He has all our days outlined and numbered — every exciting adventure, every breathtaking moment, every heartbreaking season. He’s there. His Word is there. His Spirit is there.

While we won’t know every curve, pit stop or re-route, we know who is in the driver’s seat. Are we there yet? No. But in the meantime, Lord, we’ll be living out what you’ve created us for; always on the lookout for what’s right before our eyes.
