Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. Ephesians 6:10-11 New International Version
This is a stretch of road on a route I’ve been walking with my Miniature Schnauzer, Cosette. See that short, split rail fence on the other side of the road? There are a couple of large, intimidating dogs that live behind it who have been left out in their yard the last couple of weeks. In fear of them jumping the fence and attacking my little grey pup and me, we started cutting across the field on the other side of the street to avoid the danger. After doing that a couple of times and ending up having to carry Cosette and pick thorns and stickers from her paws and my socks, I decided to stay along the paved road and brave the barking. It was only then I noticed the flags for the underground electric fence. The dogs were contained.
How often does the enemy intimidate us to wander from what we know is a God-paved path for us? He can appear so big, growling lies and threats along the way. Out of fear we may try to play it safe and walk the long way around the perceived danger only to find our detour riddled with thorns and stickers. It can be scary to walk in faith through the threats, but God has the enemy contained.
“I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.”
