Trusting God with the Unknown.

Here in Colorado Springs, weather predictions can be untrustworthy. A forecast calling for twelve inches of snow frequently turns into the reality of one inch or less. It doesn’t help that we can have severe weather in one part of town, while a mile away the day is gorgeous. I vividly recall standing in the sun of a parking lot where taking two steps forward would put me in a torrential downpour. Most of the year, my car is packed with extra gear in preparation for sudden unpredictable weather changes.

This barometer my dad has at his home seems most suitable for the circumstances here. This barometer is missing the arms that point to expected weather. It lists all the things that might happen, but has no way of telling what is happening. The only real way to know is to stand outside and figure it out yourself.

Sometimes our spiritual walk can appear the same way. Everything seems just fine when we’re hit by a sudden storm, or conversely we can be in the middle of a major storm only to have it suddenly subside. It can be frightening to have no barometer to tell us what to expect.

^“And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.”  And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”

This scripture reveals that what is going on all around us doesn’t matter. What matters is who is with us. Jesus was not disturbed by the storm, He remained in complete control. With Christ at the center of everything we do there is no need for anxiety. We can trust Him in every circumstance.
