“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
Galatians 6:2 English Standard Version

When we were doing a vicarage year in North Dakota, my husband and I went to Teddy Roosevelt National Park. One of the most notable things about this park is the sheer amount of buffalo throughout the entire park. Many times on our drive through, we would be surrounded by these creatures, driving slowly through herds of them and being in awe of their size and numbers.

It makes me think if that could be how we might see ourselves as Christians. We often think of herd animals surviving and thriving in community with one another, but we don’t often think that way when it comes to people. God did not create us to be alone.

“Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’”
Genesis 2:18 English Standard Version

God blessed us with the community of believers, a family that we are baptized into that gives us purpose and belonging. We, like herds of buffalo, rely on each other and thrive in community. It is often when we are alone that we feel the worst attacks of the devil or our anxieties and worries. The community of believers can bear one another’s burdens, point each other to the cross, and remind one another of the love and forgiveness we have in Jesus, Christ our Lord. Today, I would encourage you to reach out to a brother or sister in Christ to see if they need prayer or a friendly face. We are like a herd, gathered together before the feet of Jesus.
