Blanketed in Mercy

Advent in the Quiet Places

“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”
Isaiah 1:18 English Standard Version

After an extended mild fall, we had our first significant snowfall of the season at our house last week (and much to our children’s delight, their first snow day from school!)  Like most winter days, we spent the time huddled inside, watching the quiet stillness of the snow in the forest. The world that only yesterday felt harsh and hurried was now standing still, wrapped in white. What once was brown and dry was blanketed in snow. Nothing had changed, and yet everything looked new.

Advent invites us into that same kind of stillness. It does not ask us to rush or to perform; rather, it calls us to pause long enough to remember our deep need for a Savior and the even deeper mercy of the God who comes to us. In common confession, we speak often of sin and grace, Law and Gospel. Advent holds these together beautifully. The Law shows us the muddiness of our hearts; the Gospel shows us Christ—the One who steps into our world not to condemn but to cleanse.

Fresh snow gives us a glimpse of what God promises in Christ: a covering not of despair, but of compassion; not of mere beauty, but of redemption. Snow cannot erase what lies beneath, but the blood of Jesus truly does. He comes to us—the Word made flesh—carrying forgiveness we could never earn and grace we could never manufacture on our own.

And this is the miracle Advent prepares us to receive: not simply that Christ once came, but that He comes still and will come again. Into our confessed sin, He speaks absolution. Into our weary hearts, He brings rest. Into our chaotic days, He brings the unhurried peace of His presence.

As the trees wait quietly beneath its spotless blanket, so we wait with hope. For the Child born of Mary is also the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world. And He will come again, gathering His people and making all things new—brighter, purer, and far more beautiful than freshly fallen snow.
