Bloom Where You are Planted

“And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here I am! Send me.’”
Isaiah 6:8 English Standard Version

There is a lovely lilac bush right on the edge of our front yard that is in full bloom. I love lilac bushes. When I was young, we used to have one right outside the kitchen window where I ate breakfast every morning. The fragrance is amazing, but the bloom season is short.

Throughout my life, I have experienced a lot of change. Change can be good, but it can also cause stress and anxiety. I moved a few times as a child, and then several times as a military spouse. I have lived in eight different states – three of them more than once. I can’t begin to count the number of actual homes I have lived in.

There is a term often used by military spouses about the lifestyle: “Bloom Where You are Planted.” I took that to heart on each and every move. I made quick friendships and became involved in everything I could. Our family took in as much of the surrounding area as we could before getting the orders to move to the next potential “best duty station ever!” We answered the call each and every time – with veracity and excitement.

My roots had to be shallow and flexible for transportation to the next adventure. That did not, however, mean that I could not contribute each and every time – to bear fruit or bloom, if only for a year or two. It actually became contagious and a bit addictive for our entire family.

God calls each and every one of us to bloom where we are planted. To make a difference no matter how much time is given to us. Lord, may I be an instrument for you, and be willing to go where I am sent.
