“When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your love, O Lord, supported me.”
Psalm 94:18. New International Version

My daughter and grandson were ‘stuck’ in New York City for a day and a half due to flight delays.  Rather than grumble and fuss, they spent the day on a double-decker bus which drove to various sights in Manhattan.  They were able to get off the bus and walk and explore at each stop.  One of those stops was the Brooklyn Bridge.  I love that the picture my daughter took was of the girders under the bridge deck.  After all, they make the bridge deck possible, continually supporting it.  And vehicles and pedestrians who use the Bridge daily.

The girders of God’s love support us.  The girders of God’s love make possible the ‘straight path’ to the Lord’s heart across the outstretched arms of the wooden cross of God’s love for us.  The girders of God’s love support our every footstep.  The girders of God’s love provide a firm foundation for walking the way of peace, justice, mercy and grace in Jesus.  The girders of God’s love provide structure to his example of supporting love for family, for friends, for Christian brothers and sisters, for the Church, and especially for the neighbor.  The girders of God’s love provide emotional, psychological, spiritual support to help us across the challenges that life can send our way.

The girders of God’s love are the Father’s cradling arms, Christ’s loving “Come to me”, the Spirit’s breath of life. The girders of God’s love are forgiveness, salvation, community with him and with one another.  The girders of God’s love are the Scriptures which speak to us every time we open them.  The girders of God’s love are the life of continuous prayer in which we are engaged with the Lord and the song of praise that swells our hearts and fills our souls.

Find a bridge today.  Walk below it if you can.  Then look up and praise the Lord.
