Being lights for God’s glory.

Christmas time is probably my favorite time of the year. There is something about the sun going down early in the evening, along with the cold air that makes things seemingly slow down. You get to go inside and enjoy some coffee or hot chocolate, and read a book or watch some Christmas classics.

Another favorite activity this time of year is driving around town, looking at all the lights that people put up to celebrate the season. And of course, this is the time when Christians celebrate the birth of Christ. It’s not surprising that lights go up in the same season that we celebrate the birth of our Savior.

He is the light of the world.

Christ also instructs His followers to be lights in the world. This is not a one month occupation, but a year-round responsibility. This is not a burdensome calling; it is sharing the love that Christ has given us with other people. No matter the circumstances, we are to be joyful representatives of Christ.

Notice that the verse does not say that we are to do good works, so that others may marvel at what a great human being we are. Rahter, our good works – our lights – are to point to the glory of our gracious Father in heaven, who has bestowed upon us the greatest gift known to man.

Let us not conceal and hide away this most beautiful gift. Let us put our light on a stand for all to see. This gift that we have received through Christ has been offered to everybody, so let’s not keep it to ourselves. Amen.
