A New Creation

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 English Standard Version
While I can’t say I love the wind during the fall months; I appreciate the intention behind it. The wind and cold in collaboration, assist the trees in shedding their former selves. Walking along this path the other day, I stopped to consider the imagery. These trees are losing their leaves, stripped of what was and made barren. The fall occurs. In the winter, they appear still and lifeless. But there’s beauty in this phase. It’s preparation time. There must be plenty of room for the beauty that lies ahead.
Seemingly dormant and exposed, the trees succumb to significant change induced by weather (temps, light and water). In perfect, Creator-led timing, these same trees start to show signs of new life. There are flowers, fruit, lush foliage, and even new wood for the limbs and trunk. The roots increase and expand, creating an even more secure base for which to withstand future storms.
What a visual. What a parallel. We are so much like these trees when it comes to our own transformation. We needed our former self to fall. On numerous occasions, we are instructed to deny self, to forget what’s behind, to be a living sacrifice. Because of Jesus, and the ultimate sacrifice on that all-important tree, we have been given new life. We receive this gift of mercy and righteousness not because we’ve earned it; but because God loves His children more than anything. He is at work, at every moment — giving us His light, the right conditions and living water to heal, restore and transform. He has work for us to do, in the glory of His holy name.
Lord, I pray that you would continue to draw us closer, teaching us to abide in you so that we can be bearers of fruit for your kingdom. Thank you for making all things new. Amen.
