The elusive promises of God.

Rainbows. For God’s children they bring to mind the promises of the Father. They stir hope in glimpses that can fade away in seconds. Elusive, the beauty they offer can be hard to hold onto unless they are frozen in a photograph or captured in art.
As a child I wanted to touch a rainbow. Enchanted by folklore, I longed to chase it until I discovered what was at the end. Of course, I knew I would not find anything there and that the rainbow would move away as fast as I drew near; summer sprinkler play taught me that. And yet, there was still this desire to run hard after a bow of refracted light and find a treasure I could close my fist around.
It can feel the same for God’s children as we chase after our Father’s promises. Holding onto the hope that comes from his Word can feel like catching a fleeting vapor. Many promises of God will not be fully experienced until we are in His presence in the New Kingdom. Pots of gold in the form of easy fixes and fast relief are not often given in this life. The way to the end of the rainbow may be as treacherous as the one in this picture.
Even so, dear children of God, may we have grace to remain enthralled by the promise of His Kingdom! Let’s keep chasing hard after Abba’s rainbows, for His promises are not as elusive as they seem. One day, because of Christ, the rainbow of His promises will become a solid bridge beneath our feet, leading us to complete joy and freedom in His presence.
“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God.”
