“…[The Lord] makes me lie down in green pastures….”
Psalm 23:1. New International Version

A number of years ago, the band “Chicago” recorded a song titled, “Color My World”.  It’s a beautiful song, both lyrically and musically.  It’s a love song, as you might guess from the title.  Check it out on YouTube today.

On an overcast day, when the sky and ocean bear the identical, almost oppressive, shade of gray, there is still color.  The yellow of the street’s center line.  The green of an empty bench.  The green grass.  That bit of grass may not be enough for a pasture.  The green bench might not resemble a pasture at all.  The image of rest that the pasture and Psalm evoke is captured by the bench.  Sit awhile.  Relax.

Our days can occasionally resemble the gray of an overcast day and sea.  Sometimes it is more than a day.  A whole season of life (of whatever length that might be) finds us feeling stoop-shouldered, trudging through a monotone world.  It is a wonder what a sudden touch of color can do to brighten the spirit.  That can be literally true.  It can be metaphorically true.  The presence of others, the reminder of hope, the joy of laughter, an out-of-the-blue call from a friend–all of these and more bring “color” into our lives.

So does our God.  Every day.  Jesus often said, “Whoever has ears, listen up!”  I think he would also say, “Whoever has eyes, look up, look around, LOOK!”  Look for God to be present, painting your day with a swatch of color at the least, with his whole palette of colors.  What will that be?  Who will that be?  The Father’s love.  Jesus’ salvation.  The Spirit’s fresh breath of Life.  Hope.  Faith.  Family.  Friends.  Church.  Fellowship.  Fun.  Eyes raised up from the pavement and the tip of our shoes to behold the Glory of God in his Creative world.

Find a bench today, whatever the color.  Have a seat.  Open your eyes.  How has the Lord colored your day?
