Psalm 51:12 English Standard Version

I think we all appreciate a compelling comeback story, right? The underdog, the unlikeliest of heroes, the lowly protagonist; we enjoy those endings. I was rereading Nebuchadnezzar’s story recently and could not help but think of all the other incredible comeback stories purposefully penned for God’s great glory and our benefit.

King Neb was this unhinged narcissist, best known for his fiery furnace. And yet, we see the Lord at work in and through the entirety of His life. His ego ultimately landed him a humbling stint in the wilderness, dwelling with the beasts. It’s there that he eventually lifted his eyes to heaven and blessed the Most High. He was restored in every sense. This time, he ruled the kingdom honoring the King of heaven, with a renewed, humble heart.

God continues to pursue us, revealing His glory through our life story of grace and redemption. As we are told in 2 Peter, He wants all to come to repentance. He is patient towards us; yet not slow to make good on His promises. In thinking about this, I noticed some patterns in these Biblical comeback kids.

1.) They have varying degrees of past baggage — mistakes, trauma, trials, sin struggles.

2.) God is in clear pursuit of them, sending someone to offer help or deliver a specific message (sometimes God Himself!).

3.) The (most common) outcome is a life lived with intention: a repentant, grateful heart combined with a daily mindset dedicated to furthering His message and expanding His Kingdom.

That brings us here. Where are you in your story? Can you feel His pursuit and plan for you? How is God using your very life story to help you and others lift your eyes heavenward?
