Trials into Testimonies

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. James 1:12 ESV
James is a bit spicy, isn’t he? He’s direct and to the point. Certainly does not mince any words. Upon first glance, this particular passage is a little hard to digest. Not only are we told we will endure trials of many kinds; we are also encouraged to consider them a gift. That’s quite an ask and seems a bit silly. Admittedly, I have not always “counted it joy” or responded well to sin, struggles and heartache. Let’s be honest,: besides Jesus, does anyone have a perfect post-trial score? That would be impressive…and probably not possible.
Let’s talk about what this means when it comes to our faith. Perhaps you’re in the middle of a difficult season now. Most times, trials sneak up on us, unsuspectingly. Maybe just a curveball, a pivot or mild change. And then, there are bombs. This is the gift? While it may feel unfair or even cruel, this is the opportunity. We pray with everything we have and cling to God. We let Him guide in our actions and speech. It is in these moments we realize that He is all we ever need and He will not let go. His presence becomes real. The peace that surpasses, that grace that abounds and His unconditional love begin to make sense. You realize, He’s in this.
And that…changes…everything: our heart, our faith, our grace toward others and how we live.
If you’re like me, previous responses to trials could be a mixed bag. We are not perfect. However, our pasts can inform future decisions and reactions. That’s just it. We don’t reach a point of escaping hardship. There’s no graduation, until we are with Jesus. But we have all we need to endure, persevere and experience that joy that accompanies a deeper trust in the Lord. Friends, those trials help secure our faith and turn into testimonies. What a gift.
