“Praise the name of God forever and ever,
for he has all wisdom and power.
He controls the course of world events;
he removes kings and sets up other kings.
He gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to the scholars.
He reveals deep and mysterious things
and knows what lies hidden in darkness,
though he is surrounded by light.”
Daniel 2:20-22 New Living Translation
As we travel through life, we cross over roads and bridges that lead us through a variety of the usual milestone events—birthdays, graduations, weddings, having children, job promotions, retirement—all are fairly expected. But each of us experiences unpredictable times that are painful and difficult, heartaches that stretch our faith but hopefully drive us to a deeper relationship with God.
This year has been particularly unusual for all of us. No one could have predicted a global virus with its economic upheaval, political polarization, 40,000 wildfires in the West, more intense tropical storms in the Atlantic than available alphabetic names and the possible undoing of 10 years of progress of curbing global poverty. All in one year!
Yet this is nothing new to God. These verses are from the Old Testament book of Daniel that took place during Nebuchadnezzar’s reign in the 6th century B.C. For centuries before this time and centuries to come, God knows every ominous and frightening event that will happen. He is never surprised, never anxious and never unprepared. He will always be in control, always be our powerful sovereign king and always love and care for us. God is strong and mighty to see us through anything.
So boldly go into the future with God. Do not worry. Leave your anxiety with Him. Pursue your relationship with God with all your heart. Live without fear, for He has conquered evil! Praise the Lord! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.
