“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”
Psalm 42:5-6 English Standard Version
The waters of the Thames River were not troubled. The day was cold, but the water was not troubled. Nevertheless, London Bridge (along with many others) crossed those waters. It still does. When the waters are calm; when the waters are troubled, the Bridge stands and people cross safely. There are no trolls under this bridge, as in the nursery rhyme.
Over the centuries, many Christians have viewed the cross-piece of Christ’s Cross as a bridge over the chasm of our sin. His Cross has been devotionally pictured as bridging the otherwise unbridgeable abyss our sin created between God and us. I have used these images myself.
There may well be demonic ‘trolls’ in the unfathomable depths of the spiritual cleft separating us from God. They do not worry us. They need not concern us. We cross on Hope into the arms of a loving Heavenly Father. He crosses to us on the Way of that Hope that is ours in Christ Jesus.
Worries; troubles; threats; doubt; fear; anxiety; depression; enemies; flood-waters of all sorts of origin and definition — still, Hope bridges our lives to God. This Hope endures. It is the beating rhythm of love for us from God’s own heart. Look down at your feet. They are on the Way that is Christ, crossing continually to God’s Love over the Hope of the outstretched arms of the Cross.
