“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'”
John 14:6 English Standard Version
On a recent walk with my family, my daughter asked me, “Why are there so many curves in the path? Why doesn’t it just go straight through?” Isn’t that a question we ask of our own lives! Why are there so many curves? Why did it take me so long to get to this place I want to be? Why did my path curve way over here instead of going over that way like I thought?
I tried to show my daughter how the path follows the natural curves and small hills of the landscape. And I realized that when I’m on a walk, the purpose is the walk itself; I enjoy the curves in the road and where they take me. I’m not trying to get somewhere quickly, I’m there for the journey itself.
There are things in my life that haven’t always gone the way I thought they would. Things have happened that I wish hadn’t. Some things have taken a lot longer than I wanted them to. Some things that I wanted to happen haven’t happened at all. But when it comes down to it, I’m so grateful overall for all the curves in the path along the way.
We may not always understand God’s plan, but we can always trust Him. The important thing to remember is that no matter which way the path goes, it’s when we go off the path that we get lost. As long as we follow Jesus, we will get to where we need to go, and are hopefully able to enjoy the journey.
