Developed Nature

Meeting Our Needs

I grew up in the city of Houston. It was filled with concrete, skyscrapers, and busy roads. You could walk blocks and not see any real signs of nature: No grass or trees. I remember in my neighborhood, we’d have to walk a ways to find an open field to play catch.

That brings us to our image for today: A picture of nature going through and around development. Or is it development going through and around nature? Were it not for the two cars and the bridge, this image would offer a beautiful image of a small stream cutting through the foothills of Colorado. I still like it!

When I see the beauty of the creation, the wonder that is nature, it reminds me of God’s Word of promise and comfort in Luke 12:25-27. We read,

“And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these”.
English Standard Version

For me, and perhaps for you, getting out into fresh air and letting the grass tickle your toes is a way to reconnect with God’s creation in the middle of a hectic life. Just feeling the sun on your skin, the birds singing, and the sound of water flowing down the stream is great!

Our loving God knows what we need and He meets those needs and often exceeds them. When I see how He has cared for the smallest creatures and plants in nature, it fills me with great comfort knowing He cares even more for you and for me.

If you look outside, maybe you see a concrete jungle. Maybe the hurried pace of life causes you stress and anxiety. You are not alone! Many people struggle with that, and our Lord’s words of promise provide both comfort and hope.
