“Look straight ahead,
and fix your eyes on what lies before you.
Mark out a straight path for your feet;
stay on the safe path.
Don’t get sidetracked;
keep your feet from following evil.”
Proverbs 4:25-27 New Living Translation
In this world, many pride themselves on taking the road less traveled because it is often steep and curvy, or dangerous. Others climb mountain paths that wind around leading to beautiful waterfalls, or wildflower filled valleys. It is thrilling to go off the usual safe roads to discover what awaits.
As Christians, God calls us to keep our path straight, but a straight path can be boring. It’s the unexpected curves, the bends in the road, and the surprises along the way that make life interesting. In Hebrew, the word “straight” means that God promises to direct your steps, and help you go the right way, which, of course, is His way. That’s the only way you want to walk. It’s not because you aren’t smart enough to chart your own course, but because you’re smart enough to know His course is the best one for you.
As the Lord directs your steps on life’s path, one of the benefits is that He helps to keep you from being led astray into evil. Not only can we get into sin by our own design, but we can be easily deceived, and seduced, by the enemy. Following His path is never monotonous, there is adventure everywhere! He promises to guide you on the right paths, and keep you on track, no matter how many twists, and turns, you encounter between here and heaven.
