“Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 18:3
I had forgotten all about the old high chair but when my sister called me and reminded me about some things I had left on the farm, there was the boys’ wooden high chair. With my youngest son and his wife just giving birth to a little girl, it hardly seemed possible that those three strapping men could have ever fit into that chair!
It is a good thing that when Jesus warns us to “change and become like little children” He does not mean that our bodies need to become small again, but our big overstuffed pride definitely has to downsize! We think we need to be in control of our lives and “play God” all too often. We want to call our own shots and do what we want.
We want our own way and we don’t want anyone telling us what to do.
But that is not the way of Jesus. “Thy will be done” is His way. “I came to serve” is His way. The “way of the cross” is His way.
He calls you and me to follow His way, to follow Him, to say “no” to our inflated egos and “yes” to Jesus. He wants us to become like little children and to allow the Father to lead us, to depend upon the Lord for everything in our lives, and to trust Him with our bodies and our souls.
Dear Father, forgive me for wanting my own way. Make my heart like the heart of a little child, content to be led by You. I trust you, Lord, may Your will be done. In Jesus name, Amen.
