“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
Psalm 23:6 English Standard Version
This beautiful Psalm, composed by King David, is probably the most well-known, oft-cited verses from the Bible. We hear it in Christian circles, especially in times of trial and mourning. We hear our children recite it as a memory verse. We even hear it in the secular world of television, music and elsewhere. Sometimes I wonder if they realize the source and significance.
As Believers, these words probably elicit strong feelings and memories. It might be a go-to verse when life feels out of control, or when we need a moment of calm and comfort. As I recently mediated on these beautiful lines of Psalm 23, the word “dwell” stuck with me. To dwell is to live or stay as a permanent resident. The imagery here paints a picture of the Lord’s house in heaven. Forever in eternity is what David points to, as he uses the future tense. Prior to that phrase, though, he speaks confidently about the days of his earthly life — that goodness and mercy will follow. This led me to another Psalm attributed to David:
“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
Psalm 16:11 English Standard Version
I love the phrase “in your presence, there is fullness of joy.” That means we are complete and lack nothing when we’re with our Shepherd. While we remain on earth, fulfilling our callings, we are given access to this joy, goodness and mercy. The Lord has provided His Words of hope and encouragement, His spirit of peace and promise of pleasures forevermore. When we fix our eyes on Jesus in the here and now — dwell, abide and remain in Him — we are fulfilled in this life no matter our circumstance. And… we look forward, with unspeakable joy, to dwelling in the heavenly home He’s prepared for us.
