“Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.”
2 Timothy 2:21 English Standard Version
I am of Italian heritage, and it also happens to be my favorite type of cuisine. I could stuff these empty shells with many different and delicious ingredient combinations. Sometimes I have trouble deciding which combination to use.
While I love pasta, I must also admit that there are days when I feel just as empty as these shells. There are many obligations to fill up my days, but are they the right ones?
Often, God is not in charge of my life, but rather I am a slave to all of the fixations of this world. Work, kids’ activities, sports, and constant commitments to others can wear me so thin that there is nothing left for me to give back. Even well-intentioned choices and church involvement can become overwhelming when there are too many activities on my plate.
Struggle with past failures, addictions, and unhealthy relationships can also keep me from becoming a vessel that God can use for His purposes. I encounter many people searching to find meaning in their life, but who end up entrenched on the sidelines rather than opening themselves up to God’s plan.
Paul’s message for Timothy was very personal and intimate, but it also pertains to us today. He urged Timothy to separate from what would keep him from becoming a vessel of honor for Christ – to remove that which was impeding work for His glory.
The words of Paul are true for all who are a part of the body of Christ. Each of us must be diligent in doing our part with a fervent desire to become a vessel for His honor. That means emptying ourselves of all that hinders us, and replacing it with that which furthers the mission.
Lord, please help me rid myself of all that would prevent me from serving you.
