When Work is Finally Done

“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God…”
Hebrew 4:9
Traveling is hectic and tiring, so imagine our delight in finding some giant rocking chairs in the Saint Louis airport! There is nothing like a little rest on the journey in a good old fashioned rocking chair.
Rest is a good thing. It rejuvenates us both in body and in soul. But while we’re on this earthly journey a rest is never permanent, only a respite between tasks and daily work.
However, for the people of God, there is the promise of an eternal rest. When this journey of life is over, we will finally have true rest. A rest from the constant battle against sin, death, and the devil. A rest from the daily struggle against temptation and evil desires. A rest from the grief and pain and sadness that always hovers over even our most joyful moments of life.
Some would promise rest, security and happiness in this life. But we know that without Christ Jesus there is no true rest, no true security, no true joy. In the work that Jesus had done for us, we find our rest, even in the midst of this very hectic and work filled life.
In Jesus Christ we find solace for our souls in times of grief and comfort in our pain. In Him we find a Friend who never leaves us. And when this life is finally over, we will see Him face to face, and we will truly rest in His love and presence forever.
The golden evening brightens in the west;
Soon, soon to faithful warriors cometh rest;
Sweet is the calm of paradise the blest.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
