“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.”
Matthew 10:29-31 English Standard Version
Anyone who is a parent can tell you that one of the worst parts of being a parent is when your kids are sick. My energetic, constantly-moving son is like a different person when he is sick, and it breaks my heart when he is not himself. When you love someone so ridiculously much, the worry can be overwhelming. You can feel powerless to make them better, and so worry is the only thing you have left. Or is it?
As a parent, I feel that no one can love my kids like my husband and I can. We know everything about them and love every little detail. But the passage in Matthew reminds us that God is the ultimate parent. If I think of my kids’ hair, I can picture the exact color of it, I can feel the texture of it in my hand, I know what it looks like when it is clean and when it needs to be washed. I can predict what it will do if I try to move it a certain way. But Jesus said that even the hairs on our head are numbered! Do I know every strand of hair on my children’s heads? I don’t!
There are so many Bible verses that remind us not to be afraid. When our children are sick and even when we are sick ourselves, we have someone who loves every hair on our head and holds us in His hands. What a comfort!
My dear friend Shannon Adducci has written a beautiful song for her son that describes this. Let it be a reminder to all of us that no matter how loveless we may feel ourselves, or how much we love others, we have a God who loves us more than we can even fathom.
