“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Hebrews 11:1 New King James Version

The word “faith” is complex, isn’t it? It’s multifaceted. At times, it maybe even feels a little elusive or abstract. Other times, it may seem distant or inaccessible. We use it often when talking about our Christianity, or “faith journey.” In its purest form, it is the gift we’ve been given by God. According to Oxford Languages, faith is complete trust. It’s also a strong belief in God, based on spiritual apprehension, not proof. “Apprehension” is quite the word in this context. We tend to view it as “hesitation or anxiety,” when in this instance, it means “understanding, grasping or comprehending.”

So… what is faith exactly?

The author of Hebrews takes us through a beautiful definition. Faith — the kind given by our gracious God — is the assurance, the affirmation of this hope we have, though we don’t see or grasp it all. It’s the incredible work of the Holy Spirit, nudging us to trust, obey and walk. As we continue in Hebrews, Chapter 11, we see many examples of our ancestors walking by faith, thus receiving their commendation. Faith is believing that He has good plans ahead. Faith is trusting every promise and following where He leads. Faith is strengthened by hearing and sharing His word. Faith is confident conviction that grace changes everything. Faith is fervently praying and releasing, certain that He knows it all before we even decide to submit the request. Faith is letting Him handle our struggles, knowing that nothing is impossible for God.

Sometimes life challenges our faith. There may be moments of uncertainty. There may be questions that arise without answers to accompany them. In this world, there will always be challenges and challengers; so many voices, distractions and world views vying for our attention. In those moments, go straight to the source. His word and His presence will lead you beside quiet waters and restore. Your faith will make you well.
