“For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;
he stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
he is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
guarding the paths of justice
and watching over the way of his saints.
Then you will understand righteousness and justice
and equity, every good path;
for wisdom will come into your heart,
and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul”
Proverbs 2:6-10 New American Standard Bible
‘A cactus has been the only houseplant that I’ve ever been able to keep alive for any length of time. I think it was actually a few years before there was a mishap where it fell and smashed. But it never suffered from my forgetfulness in watering.
These cacti were transplanted into the botanical garden some 80 years ago when they were 5′-6′ tall. They now stand over 30’. Cacti are succulents which means they store water that is used when rain is scarce. At this point these plants have huge reserves of water and could survive extreme drought or dry seasons.
It seems all too easy for me to forget that God has stored up all that I need in His Word. I flounder by myself apart from Him. When I turn to Him I am filled with His wisdom. He becomes a storehouse of refreshing to me. So why do I wait so long at times?
He seems uninviting when my life is filled with other things. Compared to the nutrients and liquid in this cactus, a simple and easy drinking fountain is more obtainable. But in the midst of the desert or drought, this cactus is life. In my neediness I am only satisfied by God. In my hunger, He guides my soul. He offers this at all times, not just when I am needy.
Lord, help me turn to You today. I am needy whether I feel it or not. Quench my thirst for Your wisdom as only You can.
