Firmly Planted

Shallow Roots will not Withstand

He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
(Psalm 1: 3-4)

A few months ago, we experienced a wildly-destructive windstorm in Colorado Springs. Once the storm passed and all was calm, we ventured around the block. Our neighborhood was developed in the 50’s and 60’s; so the trees are decades old and have endured their share of storms. This particular one, however, was different. Trees that had once stood as landmarks in the neighborhood and prominent features within the landscape now lay irrelevant and lifeless. Some even toppled on homes, took down power lines and crushed cars.

This photograph is a visual from our front porch at sunrise. Sometimes we laugh about this giant standing between us and a direct view of Pikes Peak. It became evident after the windstorm that this tree was not budging. The roots run deep and remain secure. Over the years, proper care helped maintain its branches and overall shape.

The same could be said about our own hearts and spiritual shape. Have we been firmly planted — rooted in Christ and secure in our faith? Do we seek a deeper relationship with our Savior, allowing Him to ensure a solid base while also extending ourselves to serve others? Do we carefully examine and recognize the need for regular maintenance? Have we also experienced seasons of destruction, affecting those around us? Perhaps we answered “yes” to all of these questions.

As we reflect and prepare our hearts this season, I pray the Lord reminds us of our calling as redeemed people and ambassadors for Christ. Jesus instructs us to abide in him. May we remain deeply rooted in truth and love so we not only withstand the storms, but bear fruit on His behalf.
