“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.  For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

II Corinthians 4:18 New International Version

Does the picture show you everything?  Is something left out?  If so, what is it?  Or do you need more information?

I watched a show on Disney+ where a totally blind man descended into a volcano.  He talked about hearing the sights.  I have known blind persons who amaze me with their ability to navigate without sight.  I am dependent on my eyes, for certain.  But my eyes don’t always tell me everything.

Take this picture, for example.  If you don’t live in Edmonds, Washington you might not know that there is indeed something missing.  The fog and clouds are hiding the snow-capped Olympic Mountains from our eyes.

As with things in the natural world, our eyes don’t always tell us everything in the spiritual world.  Especially in the spiritual world. And perhaps even where the natural and spiritual intersect: “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible” (Hebrews 11:3).

So we fix our eyes on what is unseen.  We look to a Heavenly Father who loves us; we see our Lord Jesus in the words of the Scripture; we know that truth of the Holy Spirit’s presence breathing life into us moment by moment.  We look to the eternal things of God’s promises through Jesus Christ.  We fix our eyes, the eyes of faith, on those things.  We believe, even when believing is difficult.

One day, God will heal our vision. The fog will lift, and the glory of Heaven will astound us as our feet touch the golden streets.   But we don’t have to wait until then.  Look to Jesus.  You will be amazed at what you can see.
