And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
Mark 8:34 English Standard Version
The nearby lake and park are home to a number of birds. Spring produced healthy batches of ducklings and goslings. They are adorable. Another sweet miracle, designed and sustained by the Maker. We love visiting the lake to watch them cling closely to their mamas. We are sure to keep our distance as, just like any mother, she warns us if she’s uncomfortable with our proximity. These babies are dependent upon their leader, protector and guide.
In Mark (and the other gospels), we hear Jesus provide a direct statement. He says to his followers and all with ears to hear that we must be willing to sacrifice. If we are truly to let Jesus take the lead, it means that we are not in control. We are to follow with genuine faith and unwavering trust in our Savior who offered the ultimate sacrifice so we could be called His.
Not only are we told to deny our self-seeking ways, we also are to take up our crosses. That means whatever sufferings/burdens/trials/temptations/thorns we’ll face, we will embrace them and endure. Jesus is the leader, protector and guide, helping us persevere as we follow His lead in this life. We know that suffering while clinging to Jesus produces all of the character, perseverance and hope we need to withstand the world and its battles. Ultimately, we press on towards that upward call. We are following Him, walking in the way and running this race in order to receive that prize — the crown of life.
Let’s take a moment today to consider: How are we following? How’s the self denial while serving and sacrificing going? How are we embracing and enduring our crosses? We need Him at every moment and every step. And the good news is He’s right there with us. May we constantly cling to the One who will guide, protect and lead us to our eternal home.
