Works Prepared

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10 English Standard Version
We are reading a devotion at night to our little girl that focuses on brave women of the Bible. We just finished Esther’s story. There were some gasps as we read and discussed the evil plots and violent consequences. More importantly, we focused on the very clear path God paved for Esther to save her people. One of my favorite verses comes from Esther’s cousin Mordecai as he gives her one of the best “pre-game” pep talks. To paraphrase, he says if she chooses to remain silent, there will be deliverance for the Jews from another place. (God had that already in motion, regardless.) Mordecai offers a mic-drop ending to his speech in Esther 4:14, saying, “And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
What a question! What encouragement! Esther and God’s people pray and fast in the days to come. In perfect time, she earns the favor of the King and rescues her people. God had all of the pieces prepared in advance; just like we are told in Ephesians. We are called His workmanship, His handiwork, His masterpiece. He created us in His image, on purpose with a purpose. Not only that, He has specific assignments (good works), tailored to us, already prepared. Like Esther, there is a plan in motion for our lives. We aren’t alone in our mission. He promises to never leave us. He strengthens us with His Spirit and His Word. Beyond that, like Esther, He helps us form our own counsel of advisors — people of faith who provide wisdom and encouragement along the way.
Perhaps we are a little nervous to ask or learn about His plans for us — those good works He’s prepared. Maybe there were missed opportunities to be bold in the past. Don’t worry. Perhaps He has something in motion right now. Perhaps this is the moment for which you were created.
