What Am I Sowing?

“And [Jesus] said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.””
Mark 4:30-32, English Standard Version
Recently while walking around a college campus, my family and I came across this huge tree. My daughter was enjoying taking pictures with her camera, and she had to keep backing up to try and get the whole tree in one photo!
Having kids makes me think a lot about the seeds I am planting. What little things are they grasping onto? What lessons that they learn now, when they are small, are going to grow into big trees when they get older? This thought can carry over into the rest of our lives, especially when it comes to sharing God’s love with others. What seeds are we sowing with our neighbors, at our jobs, and in everyone we come across? Are we planting the message of God’s love in the way we show kindness and take care of others? Do they know that God sent His Son Jesus for them?
I hope that not only will my children have big trees of faith in their own lives, that grow so big that they see them everywhere they go, but that I can sow seeds of God’s love all around. Only God knows where a tree may grow, but it won’t at all if no seed is thrown!
