Persistence in the waiting.

I just took this picture of my garden this morning. One would think it was the dead of winter. Nope. It’s April 30; well into spring or”sprinter” as we say in Colorado. 

I love putting seeds into the ground, watering and waiting for the veggies to mature. Well, honestly I don’t love the waiting.

In March, I started seeds indoors that have sprouted and are growing hopeful for the day all gardeners in Colorado Springs await. Mother’s day. At least, that used to be the safe-to-plant day on the calendar. It hasn’t been for a couple of years and this year seems to be promising the same delay.

Ugh.

“ Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.  Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
Galatians 6:9-10 New International Version

Even if you are not a gardener, we all are called to sow good deeds. Perhaps there are seeds you have planted in a person’s life that you are waiting to come to fruition. All parents, teachers and leaders know this kind of waiting quite well. Sometimes, just when it seems the warmth of spring will coax new growth to the surface, or when plants are just about to bud, a storm comes and delays maturity. It can be tempting to give up the good work.

This verse says there will be a harvest, but it does not specify where the growth will show up; in those we love or in our own hearts. It could be either or both. Will we still continue our labors of love?

What you can’t see in this picture is that under that snow are some cool crop seeds that I tucked into the soil last Sunday. The Truth? This snow will melt and give moisture to these seeds. God will cause them to grow. I will not give up because of a late spring. I hope you won’t either.
