“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
2 Thessalonians 5:16-18 New International Version
I was recently in a MOOD. My husband was out of town so I had the kids on my own, it was Vacation Bible School week so we were all exhausted, and to add insult to injury, I was starting to get a cold. When it was getting close to dinner time, my son asked if we could eat dinner outside in our back yard. I sighed heavily, thinking of how dirty our patio furniture was, and since we’ve had so much rain lately our back yard looks like a jungle and has way more bugs than usual. But he was so excited about it that I agreed anyway. We went out and sure enough, the table and chairs were covered in dirt and pollen, and my daughter squealed at every mosquito she saw.
But as we started to eat I looked up and suddenly went “wow!” The sun was shining on the green grass and trees, and there were the mountains that I sometimes forget are just across the street. “Kids, you sure are lucky to get to grow up in a place like this!” I said. But it’s not luck, it’s God’s awesome creation. Scripture says:
“What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”
Ecclesiastes 3:9-11 NIV
Everyday life can bring us down sometimes, but we have a God who has created a beautiful world around us, and who sent His Son to give us eternal life. We CAN give thanks in ALL circumstances!
