“Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!”
Psalm 107:1 English Standard Version
There are numerous passages woven beautifully into the Bible that encourage a grateful heart. Many even use repetition to ensure we’ve grasped the importance. And then…
Life happens. Our story isn’t written how we wanted. We’d like a major edit to our past. The present feels unfair or confusing. Not to mention, just thinking about the future breeds fear and anxiety. Work consumes. Family dynamics are challenging. Our bodies fail us. The brokenness prevails and overwhelms. And yet…
God. Is. Good.
Have we not yet learned that just a tilt of the chin to a vertical posture of worship brings about a change in our own heart? Do we think God encourages prayer, praise and thanks because He needs our words of affirmation? Our focus is so narrow. We tend to only see what’s right in front or beside us. But His view is broad, His plans are good and His will is perfect. As hard as it is for us to fully understand, there’s a much higher purpose and a greater calling on our lives than what’s on the surface.
We live because of Him. We come to know our condition, the boundless mercy and unconditional love of a Savior because of Him. We have testimonies, opportunities and victories because of Him. There’s no way we could ever worship, serve, give or sacrifice enough to repay what’s been done for us. But taking time to give thanks with a true and grateful heart sets our eyes on things above; helps us delight in the Lord and His desires; fixes our fickle focus on the only thing that will bring genuine joy.
We give thanks to the Lord for HE is good, no matter our circumstance. Because we need Him, not the other way around. The result is peace that surpasses, love that completes and hope that endures. Thanks be to God!
