When the Miraculous Doesn’t Look Like a Miracle
You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking this SoundCloud link.
I was listening to a song that was about God splitting the ocean. It made me think again about the miracles God has done. This seems like a great time in history to contemplate the miracles that God has performed.
In the Old Testament, God split the Red Sea. My goodness! When you really think about that, imagine yourself at the ocean and all of a sudden it divides and you can walk or drive from the beach to the other side of the world. Amazing!
I wonder if we have a tendency to not think about the bigness of miracles. Maybe the stories from the past are too familiar to us or we don’t think God could do those today.
If God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, then He still is performing miracles. What’s changed from the Old Testament is that the Holy Spirit empowers us as His church to work His miracles.
When Jesus was on Earth, He told us we would do amazing things after He was reunited with the Father.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.”
John 14:12 English Standard Version
It’s through the love of Christ that God gives the Holy Spirit and that we are empowered. It shouldn’t be a weird thing or something for only a few to execute. The power God gives is for all Christians to access.
This is a great opportunity to pray for a miracle. Most of the world is in quarantine and afraid. This fear is not just about the virus but facing the unknown, which can include mortality.
Which leads me to one of the biggest miracles: a life that doesn’t end. When we give our lives to Jesus, in trade we will live forever in paradise with Him.
So, let’s pray. Pray for God’s hand to recede the virus. Pray for those who know Jesus but are fearful to go on an adventure to dive deeper with Him. Pray for people who don’t know God or who have rejected Him to receive His love. Pray for God to come and show Himself to the world.
“Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
1 John 4:4 English Standard Version
