“The earth is the Lord‘s and the fullness thereof,
the world and those who dwell therein…”
Psalm 24:1 English Standard Version (ESV)
In the comic, “The Far Side,” the artist drew a picture with the caption, “God makes the snake.” He pictured a man with a long white beard, standing at a table, rolling out long thin tubes of clay and thinking to himself, “Boy… these things are a cinch!”
I like to think of what might have been going through God’s mind when he made the platypus. Part otter, part duck, part beaver – it’s as if he took leftover pieces of clay, stuck them together, and chuckled at his creation. They’re even colored like clay.
And yet, with all of its attributes, it is a creation with a purpose in God’s world.
The platypus makes me reflect on a spiritual desert I’ve been trekking with God. There have been big changes in my life, and I am looking at a crossroads, perplexed, wondering where my life is going. At times, I feel like a platypus as I look at the mixed bag of my life’s experiences. I find I’m asking, “Okay, God – now what?” And he replies,
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10 ESV
No matter what your life’s journey looks like, God has already created you with the attributes necessary to fulfill his plan. So try something. Ask God where he can use you, and be assured that he has already given you everything you need to bring glory to him.
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV
