A Choice to Trust

“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
Deuteronomy 31:8 English Standard Version
As I have mentioned before, I suffer from anxiety. A lot of my anxious feelings come when I feel out of control. Lately I have had several situations arise at once where I have felt out of control, and it’s left me feeling a little bit adrift. However, I got to fly on an airplane recently, which I love. And I realized that one of the reasons I love to fly is because once I’m in the air, I have no choice but to trust. I can’t fly the plane. I can’t make any decisions as to where the plane will go. I have SO little control that instead of being anxiety-inducing, it’s comforting. It’s like I can finally stop trying so hard to control everything. I think it’s actually the reason I love water slides too! Once you’re on that slide, all you can do is trust the water and the engineering of the slide designer to get you to the bottom!
When I am anxious, I find myself repeating the phrase “God’s in charge” as a reminder. Because really, what is life but an airplane ride, or a water slide? I thank God we were blessed with free will, but I also thank God for sending the Holy Spirit to be with us always. As Moses said to Joshua in Deuteronomy, “It is the Lord who goes before you.” Choosing to trust can be difficult, but that faith is also a gift from God. I pray for you and for me today that God blesses us with trust that He is in charge and gives us His peace!
