“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17 English Standard Version
You know that you are older when you put up a weather station in your backyard. And yes, I have a weather station in my backyard. A weather station tells you where the climate has been, where it is, and what might be coming next.
Many of us Praying With The Eyes devotional writers speak about the importance of the Scriptures in our daily walk with our God, the God who has become visible and who enlightens the world through his Son, the Word made flesh for us. It might feel like we’re a scratched record that keeps repeating the same line.
However, the Bible acts like a weather station for our souls. It tells us where we have been as we connect to the accounts of people whom God called to follow him. We reflect on where God was present in our lives, even when we were at our worst. It reminds us that today, God is our refuge and strength. He is our present help. And it points to what is coming next when we will join all the saints before the throne of the Lamb who was slain for us.
That’s all good an well, but understanding the Bible is difficult. Let me encourage you to do a couple of things. First, read 1 John, a short letter written by Jesus’ disciple, John. Yes, at times John will confuse you, but he will also remind you of the power of God’s love. Second, join a group of people who are studying God’s word together. You will find that you are not alone in your struggle to understand the Bible.
Yes, the Bible is “profitable” for our journey, for your journey, to the throne of God.
