God gives us what we need for our walk with Him.

“ I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn off your feet.”
Deuteronomy 29:5 English Standard Version (ESV)
Recently, I’ve started wearing Vibram “Five Finger” shoes. I enjoy working out in them, and have found them to be comfortable for everyday wear as well. They do not have an insole for support; instead, they have a sturdy sole, and my feet adapt to the irregularities of outdoor terrain.
Sometimes the shoes elicit humorous comments from others. Some people think my toes look funny. My favorite comment is that my feet appear to be frostbitten. Don’t worry, they’re not, and I have a pink and gray pair on order.
When I was walking this week, I thought of the Israelites and their trek through the Sinai to the land of milk and honey that God promised. I thought about how tired their feet might have felt after walking for forty years. Out of curiosity, I explored Google Maps and asked how long it would take a person today to walk from Cairo, Egypt, to Jerusalem, Israel.
The answer? Seven days!
Granted the walk was along today’s major roadways, but think about this…to walk for forty years, assuming they walked at the same pace every day, they would have walked about 1 million miles. That is about 40 times around the earth. We could continue tweaking the numbers, but the point here is that God made them walk in circles for a very long time!
Yet, their sandals didn’t wear out.
My Five Finger shoes, in spite of their durability, will eventually wear out. God’s love and providence will not.
Dear Lord, I thank you for all you provide, and today I’m especially thankful for your providence so that I may share the Gospel with those around me. Give me strength this day to continue walking in faith, that your love may shine through my actions, even down to my feet. Amen.
“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
