“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.”

Hebrews 10:23 English Standard Version

I picked this verse to be my confirmation verse back in middle school, when my experience of trials in life was very little. I had not known much pain or sorrow, praise be to God, but I knew that this verse meant something. Every time I read this verse, I always pictured someone holding onto a lifebuoy that was thrown to them as they were drowning. When I read it, “holding fast” did not seem to me to be by my own sheer force of will, but by necessity.

I will cling to this lifebuoy because that is my only option to be saved. I will cling to the promise of God, because in his promise is salvation. He is faithful to his promise, to bring us back into shore, into safety, into his presence. Sometimes we may feel like we have to hold onto God with our own power. We might feel like we have to do something in this relationship in order to receive the Good News. Instead, God saves us by his own power. God saves us by his own promises. He is faithful. In the trials of life, we may feel like we are drowning, but because of Jesus Christ, the faithful one, we can hold fast in our confession of hope.
